University of Dayton
300 College Park
Dayton, OH 45469-0510

All applications must be submitted to the Ohio Department of Education from the University of Dayton. No signed applications are returned to students. Original signatures must appear on the application.  Please do not send a copy.

Praxis Score(s): Applicants must enclose a copy of the Praxis II test score. Applications without a copy of the score will be returned to the applicants. (Please note that those applying for a technology endorsement and those already holding a principal certificate/license do not need a copy of the Praxis II score.)

For current teachers:  Teaching experience is required for an Administrative License and for a Five-year School Counseling License.  If you do not currently have an eight-year professional or permanent teaching certificate, then you application must include a letter from your central office verifying three (3) years teaching experience under a standard teaching certificate/license for the administrative license or two (2) years teaching experience under a standard teaching certificate/license for the school counseling license.  Your application cannot be processed without this letter.

For candidates without teaching experience: The Ohio Administrative Code Rule 330 1-24-05 establishes rules for licensure of school counselors without teaching experience.

These candidates for licensure may receive a provisional licensure which shall be issued to an individual deemed to be of good moral character who has successfully completed an approved program of preparation, who has successfully completed an examination prescribed by the State Board of Education, who has been recommended by the dean of teacher education at an institution approved to prepare school counselors, and who has not completed either: (1) two years of successful teaching experience under a standard teaching certificate, or provisional or professional teacher license; or (2) three years of experience as a licensed school counselor in another state.

The provisional school counselor pupil services license shall be required for entry into a one-year induction under the supervision of a licensed school counselor.

Please visit the Ohio Department of Education's website for further information and necessary documentation.

Fingerprints:  All students applying for a new license need to be fingerprinted if they have not done so within the past year as of the date the application is processed. If in doubt, re-submit the fingerprints. The Ohio Department of Education keeps fingerprinting records on file for one year. Many school districts and the School of Education and Allied Professions have the capability to fingerprint students electronically. If you are unable to be fingerprinted electronically and need the fingerprint card(s), please call the Dean’s Office at (937) 229-3146 and request the card(s). The University of Dayton does not need any verification of clearance. Clearance must be received by the Ohio Department of Education from BCII (not from the student or The University of Dayton).

Please allow approximately 4-6 weeks to receive the license.
