Practicum, Internship, & Licensure Information

The following courses must be completed prior to beginning EDC 584 Practicum:

EDC 583 Theories and Techniques of Group Counseling

EDC 623 Foundations in Abnormal Psychology
EDC 545 Counseling Techniques Lab
EDC 631 Diagnosis of Emotional and Mental Disorders
EDC 544 Philosophical, Professional, Ethical & Legal Aspects of Counseling
EDC 535 Test Interpretation and Case Studies
EDC 529 Psychology of Lifestyle and Career Decision Making
EDC 575 Counseling Multicultural Populations
EDC 635 Couples and Family Counseling

EDC 568 Research and Evaluation in Human Services (May be completed during

             Practicum, but no later than the first section of Internship)

 

The following courses are required for licensure and are best taken during Practicum and Internship:
EDC 681 Integrative Approach to Clinical Counseling (Fall Only)
EDC 683 Treatment of Mental and Emotional Disorders (Winter Only)
EDC 630 Evaluation of Mental and Emotional Conditions (Summer 1 Only)
EDC 686 Addictions Counseling

 

The following courses are taken during Internship:
EDC 700 Scholarly Project (usually taken during the first Internship section)

EDC 600 Culminating Seminar (usually taken during the last Internship section)  

 


EDC 584 Practicum: Community Counseling

The Clinical Experience of Practicum consists of a supervised field experience by a Professional Counselor (PC) or a Professional Clinical Counselor (PCC) in a human service agency or related organization that provides counseling services whose mission is consistent with a CT's academic preparation, interests, and career goals. Counselor Trainees are closely supervised and specific practical training experiences are required in individual, co-leading, and leading group counseling with clients.

 

At least six months prior to start date

1. Review the Clinical Experience Manual updated 11/07

2. Download appropriate Agency List - Dayton * Columbus

    Note: Completing the entire Clinical Experience (Practicum and Internship) at one   

            clinical site is preferred.

3. Research sites and begin making phone calls to inquire about openings

4. Secure a site

 

Upon securing a site & registering for EDC 584

1. Attend the required orientation session for EDC 584 (the date/time/location is   

    listed on the course schedule students use to register for classes). Download

    the Practicum Orientation Podcast for a brief overview about what to expect.

2. Apply for insurance through Healthcare Providers Service Organization (HPSO)

3. Apply for Counselor Trainee (CT) status through The Counselor, Social Worker &

    Marriage and Family Therapist Board online. This process can take up to four 

    weeks, and students can not begin working with clients until they receive official CT  

    status from the Board.

4. Ask site supervisor to complete the Supervision Agreement form from the Clinical 

    Experience Manual.

 

UPDATE from CSWMFTB as of July 26, 2006: Counselor trainees will no longer be able to bank hours from their practicum and apply them to their internship.

 

UPDATE from CSWMFTB as of June 11, 2008: All candidates must earn a grade of "B-" or better in all coursework in order to be eligible for licensure. Follow the link for more detail.

EDC 598 Internship: Community Counseling

The main objective of the Internship is to provide a practical training experience to Counselor Trainees through provision of high-quality supervised field experiences in a human service agency or related organization that provides counseling services whose mission is consistent with a CT’s academic preparation, interests, and career goals. The experience is meant to help a CT acquire proficiency and gain competence by applying theoretical knowledge and integrating counseling skills and techniques while under the supervision of a Professional Clinical Counselor with supervision credentials (PCC-S).
