The School Psychology Program is a graduate training program in the
Department of Counselor Education and Human Services in the School of
Education and Allied Professions at the University of Dayton. Students
who successfully complete 36 credit hours of coursework are awarded the
Master’s Degree in Education with a concentration in school psychology.
An additional 34 credit hours, including internship and a thesis, are
required for program completion and the awarding of the Educational
Specialist Degree in school psychology. Candidates must also pass the
PRAXIS II examination in school psychology for licensure in the State of
Ohio and certification by the National Association of School
Psychologists (NASP).
The program provides a curriculum that is comprehensive, integrated, and
sequential, and is approved by the school psychology standards set forth
by the State of Ohio, (NASP), and the National Council for the
Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Courses reflect current
advances in the field of school psychology and education. The program is
committed to implementation and integration of the most current
technology applications.
The School Psychology Program is structured so that course content is
accompanied by appropriate field experiences. Practica experiences are
designed to provide students with opportunities to practice skills that
are required in professional practice while under direct supervision.
Practica occur in conjunction with specific courses and are
individualized in terms of setting and field supervisor.
Internship is a culminating activity that provides students with the
opportunity to develop professional competency while under supervision.
The internship is completed on a full-time basis for one year in a
school district, with supervision provided by appropriately credentialed
school psychologists.
