Through its Marianist
traditions and principles, the mission of the Department of Educational
Leadership at the University of Dayton is threefold. The first
charge is to prepare scholar-practitioners to serve effectively in
administrative roles and other leadership positions in PK-12 public,
Catholic and other non-traditional schools. The second task is to
contribute to the knowledge base in the school administration. The
third responsibility is to provide service to PK-12 public, Catholic and
other non-public schools.
The department offers a Master's Degree in
Educational Leadership; licensure programs for principals, CIPD and
superintendents.
The department also offers opportunity for advanced study leading to
the Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership and the Ph.D.
in Educational Leadership.
Students may earn a master of science of degree in educational
leadership (MSEd) by successfully completing the required coursework
with a total of 30 semester hours. The MSEd curriculum covers topics
such as educational leadership, supervision and professional
development, instructional leadership, curriculum, school law,
internship, research, community relations, leadership in diverse
communities and school finance.
The MSEd program serves as a stepping stone to obtain a
principal license or curriculum, instruction and professional
development (CIPD) license. The principal license may be earned by
completing 12 additional semester hours and providing evidence of two
years of teaching experience under a standard teaching certificate. A student
who has earned a principal license may choose to pursue a superintendent
license.
The University of
Dayton offers a summer program for
Catholic school educators on the main campus that prepares individuals to work as effective
Catholic school leaders/administrators, meet state licensure
requirements and accommodate individual goals.
An educational specialist degree (EdS) is available to
students who have completed the MSEd. The EdS program is designed to
enhance individual capabilities for educational leadership. The program
of study requires a minimum of 33 semester hours of graduate work beyond
the master's degree.
The Department of Educational Leadership offers courses
on its main campus in Dayton, Ohio and at various
off-campus locations. In addition, all courses in the Master's
Program and Principal Licensure Program are also offered online.
The
Department's Matrix provides a two-year schedule of all courses at
all locations and is an excellent resource for planning a program of
study.
