The theme of the University of Dayton's Department of Teacher Education - "Teacher as Reflective Decision Maker in a Pluralistic Society" - is integrated throughout the entire program of study and is consistent with the school-wide conceptual framework. It embraces the complex needs of students from many different backgrounds and requires that teachers prepare as much as possible for this challenge. The  department adopted this theme in accordance with the University's Marianist Mission Statement, which encourages students to take an active role in improving the community by promoting respect, acceptance, empathy, authenticity, service, compassion, children, and a commitment to professionalism.
