The Department of Teacher Education administers the program in Early Childhood Education (BSE.ECE), which leads to a Bachelor of Science in Education and to provisional licensure to teach preschool through grade 3.  A student in the Early Childhood program is required to follow the prescribed ECE curriculum, which includes electives selected based on a well thought-out area of focus.  Focus area options can include a minor in a chosen area of study; courses toward a concentration in social studies, math, science, or literature; or coursework that supports an area of interest or out-of-state teacher credential requirements.  The number of required focus area electives should be sufficient to complete a minimum of 124 semester hours of total coursework.  The prescribed ECE curriculum may be obtained by viewing the program checksheets.

Successful completion of teacher education field experience and a 2.5 cumulative grade point average are required overall and in professional education courses to continue in the program, student teach, and be licensed.

The PRAXIS I (i.e. Pre-Professional Skills Test or PPST) reading, writing, and math subtests are required and must be waived or passed by the end of the first year.  The PRAXIS II tests are also required.  They include the Principles of Learning and Teaching (ECE) and the Specialty Area Test in Early Childhood Education.  They must be taken during the K-Prim. Methods Block, first semester, senior year.  Applications for both tests are available in Chaminade 104 and the Chaminade Annex.
