The Department of Teacher Education administers the program in Middle Childhood Education (BSE.EMS), which leads to a Bachelor of Science in Education and to provisional licensure to teach grades 4 through 9.  A student in the Middle Childhood program is required to follow the prescribed EMS curriculum, which includes two areas of concentration (24 or more semester hours required for each concentration) selected from Mathematics, Sciences, Social Studies, and Reading/Language Arts.  A minimum of 124 semester hours of total coursework is required for graduation.  The prescribed EMS curriculum may be obtained by viewing the program checksheets.

Successful completion of teacher education field experience and a 2.5 cumulative grade point average are required in the two concentrations, and in professional education courses to continue in the program, student teach, and be licensed.

The PRAXIS I (i.e. Pre-Professional Skills Test or PPST) reading, writing, and math subtests are required and must be waived or passed by the end of the first year.  The PRAXIS II tests are also required by the state.  They include the Principles of Learning and Teaching (5-9) and two content area tests.  They must be taken during the senior year.  Applications for both tests are available in Chaminade 104 and the Chaminade Annex.
