Welcome
to the Health and Sport Science Department website! We are a
vibrant, passionate, and engaging group that values the business, life
science, and educational dimensions of physical activity. Above all,
however, we value people and welcome diversity in all its forms:
race, thought, and creed. Talk is cheap, however, so we prefer to let
our actions speak loudest. We offer
undergraduate majors in dietetics/nutrition, exercise
science, physical
education, pre-physical therapy, and sport
management.
Through the study of
dietetics and
nutrition, students will be able to
shape food choices and impact the
nutritional status of the public by promoting optimal
nutrition, health and well being. The dietetics
program at UD has earned consistent approval
from the American Dietetic Association since 1943.

The
exercise physiology major is the systematic and
research-based study of the body’s responses and adaptations to exercise
including how they interact with diet, body composition, environment,
training, and certain disease conditions. Exercise physiology students are exposed to research
opportunities with faculty before designing and
conducting their own research project in their senior
year.
The program
in exercise science prepares professionals to promote and
manage positive, healthful lifestyles in others. It is designed to
provide, to the corporate, industrial, recreational, medical and
educational settings, trained personnel capable of conducting physical
fitness testing, cardiac rehabilitation and developing personal fitness
training programs that include proper exercise and nutritional
guidelines.
Students majoring in
physical education are
prepared to teach children and adolescents meaningful movement and
fitness experiences. Graduates are licensed to teach physical
education in grades pre-K through 12. A full semester of student
teaching prepares students for classroom life.
The pre-physical
therapy major is designed to prepare graduates for entry
not only to
graduate
level physical therapy programs but to other allied professional
schools including schools of medicine, dentistry, chiropractic, nursing,
optometry, and public health. Some of our graduates have also attended
masters and PhD programs in exercise science, nutrition, or
biomechanics. Because these schools and programs are competitive, admission requirements into this major are
very stringent.
The
sport
management program prepares graduates for stimulating careers in the
field of sport business. Students combine classroom knowledge with
on-the-job experience during semester long internships in the sport
industry. These experiences develop individuals for positions with
professional and collegiate teams, public and private recreational
facilities, athletic organizations, sport publishing houses, and event
management companies.
The Department also offers an opportunity for advanced study
leading to
Master of Science in Education Degree in Exercise Science.
This
flexible, personalized program provides the student with advanced
training in the discipline of exercise science and culminates in a
research thesis that is submitted for publication before graduation.
The Department now offers a
fully accredited
Doctor of Physical Therapy program. Click
