HSS 130 - 23 Self Defense for Women Instructor: Mr. Nic Garrison Contact Info: Cell: 937-559-3842 Email: www.nicgarrison@yahoo.com Course Description: The purpose of the Women’s Self-Defense (WSD) class is to provide the student with practical knowledge and skills to evaluate her environment for threats of physical assault. The student will learn how to perceive such situations and how to avoid them. The student will learn how to defend herself and escape physically harmful situations if unable to avoid them. We will warm up at the beginning of every class. You must attend warm up to participate in class. The reason for this is to avoid injury. Students will learn self-defense techniques such as throws, joint locks, pressure points, strikes, kicks and choke holds. The student may be required to conduct research on topics related to women’s self-defense, rape, robbery, muggings, physical assault, etc. and to prepare a written report on such topic(s). Class discussions will include the use of, and pro’s and con’s of, personal safety devices such as chemical weapons (pepper spray, mace), electronic devices (stun guns, personal alarms, tasers), emergency implementation weapons (keys, lipstick, pens) and weapons such as handguns and knives. UD Attendance: Each student is permitted two (2) absences per semester. As this is an attendance-based class (meaning that you must attend to learn), the University of Dayton requires an attendance rate of 85%. I view all absences the same whether it be due to you being ill, a family emergency, a job interview, oversleeping or any other reason. Up to three missed classes can be “made up”. Classes are made up by participating in a cardio kickboxing class or observing a sparring class at Total Tae Kwon Do & Fitness (TTF). A student will not be given credit for attending a TTF class unless she signs in, completes an attendance slip, has it signed by a TTF staff member and stays for the entire TTF class. An attendance slip can be obtained from me or from TTF. *Example: A student misses five UD WSD classes during the semester. The student makes up three UD WSD classes by taking three classes at TTF. Two absences remain, which is sufficient to pass. TTF Attendance: The owner & head instructor at TTF is Master Christina Bayley. She is a sixth degree black belt and has competed all over the world. She and her staff are very knowledgeable and you will learn a great deal about martial arts from them. Beginning the 7th week of the semester, students are permitted (and encouraged) to attend either kickboxing or sparring classes at TTF free of charge. Students may attend as many TTF classes as she wishes from the 7th week of the semester until the end of the semester. Visit the TTF website (www.ttftkd.com); call TTF (937-298-7119) or see me for directions to TTF.Final Exam & Grading: A final exam will be given on the last day of class, May 2nd. If a student attends five TTF classes (whether making up a missed UD class or not), she is not required to take the exam. Women’s Self Defense is a pass/fail class. A student’s grade will be based upon the following four (or five) areas:
*If written assignments are given, grading will be adjusted to the following weights:
Clothing: Students are asked to use their discretion in deciding what to wear to class. Students should keep in mind that WSD is a physical class. Students will be stretching (sometimes with a partner), kicking, falling and throwing. Unless otherwise instructed, students must remove their shoes before class begins for the safety of each student. A student may wear socks if she chooses, but she is cautioned that socks on the wood floor are very slippery. Please refrain from wearing watches or any jewelry that may gouge, scratch or become entangled. Note: To request academic accommodations due to a disability, please contact the Office for Students with Disabilities, 002 Albert Emanuel Hall, 937-229-3684. If you have a self-identification form from the Office for Students with Disabilities indicating that you have a disability which requires accommodation, please present it to me so we can discuss the accommodations you might need in the class. Class Schedule: Class is conducted every Monday & Wednesday from 10:00 AM to 10:50 AM, in the Frerick’s Gymnasium, unless otherwise dictated. Please be on time, if not early.
