Driving Direction to Accelerated School Center - Ohio in Dayton

Mission

The Accelerated Schools Center - Ohio is committed to training and mentoring school personnel in the accelerated school model for the purpose of transforming schools. The primary goal of the Center is to promote school achievement for all students in each of the network schools within the Accelerated Schools Center - Ohio.

 Philosophy

The Three Principles of accelerated schools:

(1) UNITY OF PURPOSE: In accelerated schools, all members of the school community share a dream for the school and work together toward a common set of goals that will benefit all students.

(2) EMPOWERMENT COUPLED WITH RESPONSIBILITY: Every member of the school community is empowered to participate in a shared decision-making process, to share in the responsibility for implementing these decisions, and to be held accountable for the outcomes of these decisions.

(3) BUILDING ON STRENGTHS:  In creating their dream school, accelerated school communities recognize and utilize the knowledge, talents and resources of every member of the school community. Accelerated school communities share a set of values, beliefs, and behaviors which create an environment that nurtures innovation and collaboration. As an accelerated school develops, qualities such as equity, trust, collaboration, reflection and risk-taking emerge and help guide the action and interactions of all members of the community.

Powerful Learning:

In accelerated schools, the best of what we know about education -- that which is usually reserved for gifted and talented students is shared with all students. Members of the school community work together to transform every classroom into a powerful learning environment, where students and teachers are encouraged to think creatively and explore their interests' and where they are given the capacity and the encouragement to achieve at high levels. Accelerated schools seek out, acknowledge, and build upon every child's natural curiosity, encourage students to construct knowledge through exploration and discovery, and to see connections between school activities and their lives outside the classroom. All of these learning experiences require imaginative thinking, complex reasoning, and problem-solving.

Process:

Rather than focusing on a particular grade, curriculum, or approach to teaching, accelerated school communities use a systematic process, encompassing collaborative and informed decision making to transform their entire school. The transformation begins with the entire school community taking a deep look into its present situation through a process called "taking stock."  The entire school community then forges a shared vision of what it wants the school to be - the kind of dream school that everyone would want for their own child. By comparing the vision to its present situation, the school community identifies priority challenge areas. The school community itself then sets about to address those priority challenge areas, working through an accelerated schools governance structure and analyzing their challenge areas using the Inquiry Process. The Inquiry Process is a systematic method that helps school communities clearly understand problems, find and implement solutions, and assess their results

What makes a school accelerated?:

First, the full staff (students, administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals, support staff; parents, and district personnel) explore the accelerated schools philosophy and process through a number of opportunities. The staff may: 1) review the Accelerated Schools Resource Guide, published by Jossey-Bass; 2) interview a number of principals and/or coaches involved with accelerated schools; and 3) visit accelerated schools throughout the nation. The school community may also want to invite someone from the Satellite Center to provide an in-depth presentation and Q&A session. After this exploration process, which takes several months, all members of the school community meet to discuss and reflect on their understanding of the accelerated schools process. The school community must also consider individuals to serve as prospective coaches. Next, should the school community be interested in embracing the accelerated schools philosophy and process, a formal vote or consensus must be taken to determine if the school will participate in the ASP. A school's application will not be accepted without 90 percent of full time staff and school community representatives willing to transform their school into an accelerated school.
