Greetings to All!

It doesn't seem possible that a new school year is beginning!  I don't know where the summer months went! There is much to share with you about our Network activities, a little information, a note of welcome, and a bit of my own reflection.

A LITTLE INFORMATION

The 2002-2003 school year is jam packed with opportunities for our Accelerated Schools!  The Leadership Institute was our first major gathering. We met earlier this month.  We spent two days together reviewing and using some of Linda Lambert's materials.  Linda was with us last May and will rejoin our group this May.  Our focus is building leadership capacity in our schools.

I am very excited about the Cadre Leadership Training (registration form faxed to schools) slated for September 23-24. This new training is a must for schools in year two and beyond. I've invited my colleagues, Bonnie Hamill and Joan Vasbinder, from the Southwest Satellite Center to lead us in this training. I'm expecting each school to send a team (at least one person from each cadre) to participate in this. I can think of no better way to get your cadre work off to a good start than by attending these two days of training. There will be one follow-up day of training on April 14. Those who attend in September should plan to also attend in April.  Finally, our 2nd Annual Network conference is November 8-9. The conference registration form is included in this newsletter.  Don't delay -- fill it out and send it in today!

A NOTE OF WELCOME

We are happy to welcome two new schools to our network this year. Coburn Elementary is located in Battle Creek, Michigan and serves K-5 children. East End Accelerated is a new community school in Dayton. East End is serving kindergarten through second grade students this year and plans to add a grade a year for the next several years. These are wonderful groups of people with tons of enthusiasm.  Welcome to our Accelerated Schools Network!

MY REFLECTION

During the last few month I visited several of the restored Shaker communities in New York, Maine, New Hampshire, and Kentucky. The Shakers' simple, intelligent approach to life's challenges is interesting.  For me these visits were reminders that our challenges don't often require elaborate solutions.  I've also been reading a text for our Leadership Institute.  The authors suggest that what we need are SMART goals: Specific and Strategic, Measurable, Attainable, Results-oriented, and Time bound. Let's join together this year to be SMART so that our challenges are met with simple, yet intelligent approaches!

I look forward to working with each of you in the coming months.

Meet our newest center associate

Yolanda Hart

Yolanda is an Ohio native and presently lives in Monroe.  She earned her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Cincinnati and Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Michigan.  For 10 year she worked in higher education, primarily college admission and multicultural student services.  She was the Regional Admission Officer for the University of Akron and Assistant Director of Admissions at Miami University, Middletown.  Her professional life is committed to helping young people value education and realize their highest educational aspirations.  Currently, she is completing studies in the Ph.D. program in Educational Leadership at the University of Dayton.

Way to go!!!

Students at McKinley Elementary in Elyria, Ohio received the highest test scores for 6th grade proficiency!  100 percent passed the Writing portion, 96% the Citizenship portion, 78% the Science portion, 74% the Reading portion and 72% the Math portion. This 6th grade class has almost doubled their scores.  The 4th grade scores were also improved.  Kindergarten scores have shown a lot of growth between the pre- and post-tests and were some of the largest gains in the district.

Celebration!

Chip Hall, principal, is excited to announce that McKinley Elementary in Elyria, OH celebrated the end of year vision, which was combined with field day activities.  The district Junior High School band was invited to participate and a parade through the neighborhood celebrated the 1st year of the Accelerated Schools Project.  All field day activities related in some way to Accelerated Schools and Powerful Learning.  Check out the Satellite Center website for pictures of this event! www.udayton.edu/edu/centers/oasn/oasn.html.
