Greetings from the Director

It seems like only a few months ago and we were beginning the new school year.  Now the end of the school year is fast approaching.  I want to thank you for all your hard work on behalf of children and their families.  I know that many of you feel as if you are engaged in an uphill struggle on a daily basis.  The work we are engaged in is a struggle.  I just want you all to know that I appreciate the effort put forth to make your schools better places for learning.

It has been my pleasure to be in many of your schools recently. It is always good to see you in your environment interacting with students and colleagues.  I'm always on the look out for powerful learning and it is encouraging when students can tell me what they are engaged in and why.  One of the benefits of my position is being in so many classrooms over the course of the school year.  Our powerful learning lab participants are having the opportunity to visit different schools in their peer coaching teams and in most cases these are tremendous learning experiences.  Let me encourage you to take the opportunity to visit colleague's classrooms in your own school and at other schools whenever possible.

Don't forget to submit your proposals for our Network Conference.  You'll find the form to fill out in this newsletter.  The due date is July 1.  We want to get our programs completed prior to September 2002 so don't delay -- get your proposal to us!  Be sure to read this newsletter carefully.  There are some new training opportunities available to schools next year that you won't want to miss.

Have a wonderful conclusion to your year and be sure to celebrate your successes and accomplishments!

Cadre Leadership Training -- A New Training Opportunity for our Network

The cadre leadership training is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, September 23rd and 24th, 2002 to coincide with our first monthly coaches' gathering.  This two-day workshop will be an in-depth training on the inquiry process.  Participants will walk through the inquiry process step-by-step, analyzing the process and working with others to fully understand how the process should drive cadre work.

Every school should plan to send a team of cadre leaders to this training.  A third day of training will be offered in the spring as a follow-up to these two days.  If you are interested in attending the training contact Vickie or Julie for more details.

Happy Birthday to Taft Elementary

Taft is proud to announce the 50th Anniversary of William Howard Taft Accelerated Elementary School.  Taft has a student population of approximately 350 preK-2 grade students.  The concept of "Anniversary" is difficult for some of them.  They are calling the celebration a birthday party.  We will be commemorating the event on May 8, 2002.  Our celebration will begin promptly at 9:15 a.m. in the gym.  We will have brief remarks by our honored guests and then assemble ourselves for a school wide parade led by the Middletown High School Alumni Band at 9:45 a.m.  Our morning festivities will conclude with a balloon launch and "birthday party" treats at 10:45 a.m.

BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY

It is my pleasure to work with several exceptional people.  I have the opportunity to meet and develop relationships with many school personnel in our network of schools.  These people and the relationships developed over the years are the most rewarding aspects of my role as Satellite Center Director.  Every now and then I find out about a situation where one of our coaches goes way beyond the "call of duty" to further the work going on in their schools.  When an instance occurs I think it is important for that person to receive special recognition.  It is never the intent of such individuals to get credit or gain glory; rather these individuals are willing to sacrifice personal comfort in order to improve their whole group or community.  This is just what Marla Marsh has done this year in her school community and that is why I want to publicly recognize Marla as our "Coach of the Year."

Marla is the principal at Taft Accelerated Elementary in Middletown, Ohio.  Taft is a K-2 building that feeds into McKinley Elementary, a grade 3-6 building, across the street.  McKinley is also an accelerated school.  Recently, the McKinley principal left for medical reasons.  As so many of you know from first hand experience, a change in leadership can be traumatic, but this late in the year it can be even more devastating.  To make a long story short, Marla volunteered to step in and work with McKinley for the remaining months of this school year.  She knew the Taft staff would continue functioning at top speed with a substitute principal for a few months as they had done in her OWN medical absence a few years ago.  Her primary goal in offering to step in at McKinley was to insure continuity between the two schools and the learning environment provided to the children of the McTaft community.  Marla's selflessness is also assuring a smooth transition for the continuation of the Accelerated School work at both schools.

Marla's leadership has been instrumental in embedding the ASP process at Taft and now is being extended to strengthening the ASP work at McKinley.  Her hard work, enthusiasm, and commitment to continuous school improvement are helping make the McTaft community a wonderful place for children and their families.
