Application/Selection Process

The application should be downloaded from this site and returned to the Urban Teacher Academy Office in Chaminade 309.

The application process for the 2009-2010 school year will being in March 2009. Please check back for further updates. 


The application is comprised of three items:

  • The application form will provide information needed for communication, data gathering and evidence of meeting some of the selection criteria.
  • The applicant will write a two to three page essay in response to a prompt which incorporates selected criteria.
  • Student referrals completed by a fellow student, an instructor, and the student advisor.
  • Teacher referrals should be completed by current principal, a fellow teacher and a district supervisor.

An informational meeting can be held with the applicants so that any questions or concerns can be addressed. If you have any questions about the application please call Dr. Rochonda Nenonene at (937) 229-3084.

The teacher agenda will include the following topics:

 The selection team will  include the UTA Co-Directors and a representation from the UD School of Education and Allied Professions.

The work of Martin Haberman and the SRI Teacher Perceiver Interview have informed the identification of selection criteria. A number of critical, desirable traits should be evident with both teacher and student candidates and can be demonstrated through the essay and the interview process. These common traits are

  • perseverance
  • creativity
  • organization
  • creative problem solving
  • empathy
  • desire
  • flexibility 
  • adaptability
  • stamina, and
  • acceptance of diversity

Additionally, students must have successfully completed their sophomore course of study and carry at least a 2.5 GPA. Teacher applicants must have had Pathwise Training and have documented evidence of academic success with students. It would also be desirable for mentor teachers to commit to seek National Board Certification.

The interview questions include the Haberman Star Urban Teacher Interview along with selected questions from the SRI Teacher Perceiver Interview. 

Candidates selected to participate in the Urban Teacher Academy will be notified by mail and invited to attend a program reception. Selected students, teachers, Advisory Council members, and UD and DPS representation will be in attendance. A brief program including introductions and a welcome to the program will be conducted, thus completing the selection process.
